Ciudadania Test

How to Use Civizen

Civizen has two main modes — Study and Test — plus an optional account that saves your progress across sessions. Here's how to get the most out of each one.

Step 1: Know which test version applies to you

Before you start, it helps to know which version of the USCIS civics test you'll be taking:

  • 2025 version — if you filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025. You'll be asked 20 questions from a pool of 128 and need to answer 12 correctly to pass.
  • 2008 version — if you filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025. You'll be asked up to 10 questions from a pool of 100 and need to answer 6 correctly to pass.

Not sure? Check your N-400 filing date or visit uscis.gov to confirm.

Step 2: Start with Study mode

Study mode is the best place to begin, especially if you're early in your preparation. There's no timer, no score, and no pressure — just you and the questions.

Flashcards

Work through all the questions one by one. Each card shows the question on the front and the official answer on the back.

  • Tap or click the card to flip it and reveal the answer.
  • Mark it "Got it" if you knew the answer confidently.
  • Mark it "Still learning" if you need more practice.
  • Cards marked "Still learning" stay in your deck and come back around until you've mastered them.

Filter by topic

If you want to focus on a specific area, use the topic filter to study only questions from that category — for example, just the legislative branch, just American history, or just the rights and responsibilities section.

Topics include: Principles of American Government, System of Government, Rights and Responsibilities, Colonial Period and Independence, the 1800s, Recent American History, Symbols, and Holidays.

Bilingual support

If you study in Spanish, you can toggle to see the English version of each question without leaving your session. This is helpful for practicing how to answer in English during the actual interview, which is conducted in English.

Step 3: Take a practice test

Once you feel comfortable with the material, move to Test mode to simulate the real interview experience.

How the practice test works

  • 20 questions are drawn randomly from the full question pool (or 10 if you select the 2008 version).
  • Each question is multiple choice with 4 options — one correct answer and three plausible alternatives.
  • The test stops automatically once you've answered enough to pass or enough to fail — exactly as the real USCIS interview works.
  • No hints, no second chances. Just like the real thing.

Reading your results

After the test ends, you'll see:

  • Whether you passed or failed
  • Your total score
  • A topic-by-topic breakdown showing where you did well and where you didn't
  • Every question you missed, with the correct answer shown so you can learn from it
  • A link back to Study mode to drill the topics where you struggled

Step 4: Create a free account to track your progress

You can use Study mode without an account. But creating a free account unlocks the full experience:

  • Study progress — see how many of the 128 questions you've marked as learned in English and Spanish
  • Test history — a log of every practice test you've taken, with scores and dates
  • Saved progress — your flashcard progress is remembered between sessions, so you pick up exactly where you left off

Sign up takes under a minute — just an email address and a password.

Step 5 (optional): Upgrade to Pro for unlimited practice

Free accounts get one practice test per day. If you want to run multiple tests in a single study session — which is a great way to prepare in the final days before your interview — upgrading to Pro gives you unlimited tests with a one-time payment.

Pro also removes all ads so you can focus without distractions.

A few tips for studying effectively

Start early. Even 10–15 minutes a day for a few weeks is more effective than cramming the night before. The flashcard system is designed for this kind of spaced practice.

Take the test before you feel ready. Seeing your weak spots early is more useful than discovering them the day of your interview. Use your first practice test as a diagnostic.

Pay attention to dynamic answers. Some questions — like the name of the President, Vice President, your governor, and your senators — change based on current officeholders. The app flags these and links to the official USCIS update page so you always have the current answer.

If you qualify for the senior exemption, you only need to study the 20 questions marked with a star (★). During your interview, you'll be asked 10 of those 20 and need to answer 6 correctly. Focus your study sessions on just those questions.
